Official TAKMBD Thread (To make it easier for others to find information about this, please keep all discussion/questions about the 2012 event in this thread. Thanks!)

When: The 2012 TAKMBD event will take place October 6th, from 10 a.m. til 2 p.m.

Where: Broemmelsiek Park
Directions and Park description are available at the Broem Park link.

What is TAKMBD? IMBA's explanation is here.

My version: It's an introduction to mountain bike riding that is oriented towards younger riders. We have 7 different skill stations set up for the riders, with each mimicking a situation they are likely to encounter while riding off-road. Once the rider has completed the skill section, they can join GORC led tour of the less technical trails @ Broem.

There will be free bike inspections (required prior to riding the skills course), and goodie bags to the first 100 to sign up. For more information or to pre-register (there will also be on site registration), please contact St. Charles County Parks at 636-949-7535 or visit www.stccparks.org.

What we need: LOTS of GORC people to show up and help out. There are three primary areas where we need assistance during the event, (but help setting up/tearing down will be appreciated as well). The three areas where we require help are:
  • The GORC Table

Additional thoughts ...

Please wear your GORC gear, if you've got any.

There will NOT be a rain date.

It IS ok for parents to ride along with their kids on the guided tours.

The Cub Scouts will be out again this year, starting @ 11:30. Things will be kinda crowded after that, so plan accordingly.

Wanna see what some of the previous events have looked like?

David and Katherine Krajcovic will both be around to help. Our youngest will be participating in the clinic. Thanks for putting this together!

I am planning on being in the area while this is taking place and would like to help out with the skills portion. I am a Pro Mtb racer and USAC Certified Coach. I recently was the head coach for the USAC East Coast Junior Development Camp. If you would like my help, I should be available. Mark

You might be just a WEE bit overqualified for what we do at these things. [:D] On the serious side, you are more than welcome to help. We try to keep these events low key, letting the kids learn at their own pace and comfort level. Some won't gain the confidence or skill level to ride the trails that day, but they will have been exposed to what is available. Planting that "bike riding is fun" bug is a primary objective.

Folks interested in volunteering for the "Take A Kid Mountain Biking" event at Broemmelsiek. I will be at Broemmelsiek Park @ 8am. It would be good to get folks there around 8:30am or so to set up the stunts/tents and go over the events/assignments for the day. Thanks for the great support! Bring your bikes, as it is good to have some adults out on the trail during this event!

The trails are too wet to use for the Guided portion of TAKMBD, but we still plan on setting the skills up in the grass, and the normal hours apply. If you're in the trailhead parking lot, we'll be in the field between there and shelter's #5 & #6. Please follow the Rangers parking instructions. They'll direct you to your parking area. Even tho the trails are closed, "adults" are still allowed to practice on the skills. No whining if your kid is better than you ... [:D] Hope to see everyone out there!

We're still in. Bummer about the trails but that's a learning experience in itself, knowing when NOT to ride them.
