What: The 2nd Fall 2015 Matson Hill Trail Build Day.

Where: The Matson Hill Park trail head.

(The most straightforward way) from the Highway 40/94 interchange: Take Highway 94 South approximately 13 miles. Go past Defiance to Matson, turn right and follow Matson Hill Rd to the top of the hill. Turn right onto Matson Road (now paved) and go ~ .5 mile to the trailhead, which will be on your left.  Or, click here for park location.

When: Saturday, November 21st, 2015, from 9:00~1:00.

Why: We are going to build a nice new reroute around a section that is unsustainable. If enough folks show up we can get'er done. It is conveniently close to the trail head.

Got Q's?: Please read the link to pilznr's "What to expect at a Trail Build Day" - http://forum.gorctrails.com/index.php/topic/2265-what-to-expect-at-a-trail-building-day/. Or, post up here, and we'll do our best to answer things for ya.

Please RSVP via;

GORC/SCCP's will provide on site instruction, tools, gloves, safety glasses, and a post event lunch*.

*Please contact us if you have any specific food requirements (veggie or food allergy), and we'll do our best to assist you.

Weather ...

GORC and SCCP's staff will be out on the trails prepping for the weekend in the following days, and will keep an eye on the forecast as well.  The above link about "What to expect at a Trail Build Day" goes into more detail, but the following themes are what we use when deciding to cancel an event;

  • can the volunteers safely get to the site?  (Flooding, ice/snow being the main concerns),
  • will they be safe while working?  (Concerns about lightning, or being able to stand/travel along the trail without risk of injury due to slick conditions),
  • will they be able to accomplish the intended job?  (Some trails are composed of dirt that sticks to EVERYTHING, and are impossible to work in).

Should we need to cancel, we will communicate that decision via SCCP's Trail Hotline:

636-707-0011.

We may be able to post an announcement on the GORC Twitter page, or this forum thread, but please DO NOT COUNT ON THE INFO SHOWING UP IN EITHER LOCATION.  The Trail Hotline is the O-FISH-UL method of notifying people about changes in the SCCP's Program.

If there is no message, the event is still on.  We will continue to update this thread as needed, and/or to answer any workday related questions.

Thank you.

FYI - we have roughly .11 miles of reroute that we would like to build at this event.

A "small" turnout will allow us to get started on the center section; a "large" turnout will allow us to complete the reroute, open it, and close/reclaim the old trail.  The decision of whether to finish/open the reroute won't be made until we see how much work can be accomplished with that day's crew.  While a portion of the reroute has a gravelly rock base, there is also a section that is more dirt based, and it would be nice to start compacting that over the winter via the trail being open for use.

As usual, please feel free to ask away if you have any questions.

Thanks!

Trees cut, 85% of reroute blown, but we're short a man for lunch prep.  Anyone interested in working a partial day/doing early food prep the latter half, let us know, please.

Thanks!

I wanted to give everyone who braved the cold temps and flurries a "high five" for the work performed Saturday.  Janine said there were about 15 people that completed the reroute in one day. Amazing! When Craig and I were planning it, we were thinking it would take many more folks than that.

I would have loved to have been there. I'll be seeing you all at the Spring workdays.

Matson is really getting whipped into shape thanks to all of the volunteers. I can't wait to get out and hike it in a few weeks.

Here are a couple of pics of the trail build.  These are all at the beginning of where the new reroute is.  You can see where the old trail has been closed.

Rode it yesterday. It's packing in well. Controlled burn happend on Oxen Mill. Logs were still smoldering and flickering a bit. Looks like more to come on the backside.

Rocks were slippery. Only one unavoidable muddy section just before the last climb out clockwise.
