Anyone interested in helping out with some work day prep?

I was thinking this weekend or even during the week.

Please respond if you're interested.

Mainly I was thinking of walking through, marking the problem spots, and talking about what more we can do.

Thanks!

Caleb

A group of us was hoping to ride Saturday morning and would be willing to suggest spots that could use help if you would like our feedback........hoping the trails have had time to firm up with no rain this week!!

I know this may be a bit short notice - but I plan on being out at SIU at noon if anyone would like to meet up.

I thought I could also meet again during the week - perhaps Wed late afternoon before it gets dark.

Thanks,

Caleb

sorry - I meant Saturday - either hike or bike is fine by me.

I'll come prepped for either.

I'm fighting off a somewhat intense sinus infection so I'll be slow either way.

hey caleb, sorry but we just had an emergency come up and have to deal with some stuff for pete's mom.  sorry to cancel but we can't make it at noon.  We might have some free time on sunday.  let us know if that works better for you.

We hiked a couple trails last night and jogged 1 this morning:  here are notes:

trail 1 - tree needs chainsaw - if heading from main trailhead its after the low water crossing  but before you get to the big evergreen section.

Trail 2- need chainsaw - clockwise from bike path - tree pulled to side of trail is still overhanging trail.

Trail 5 - tree needs silky saw - start at bike path and head down cross country trail - at trailhead of 5 to the right.

Trail 6 - all looked good on 6

we'll go out today and check out 3 and 4.

sorry to hear you are getting worse caleb - hopefully you got some good drugs and have rebounded by work day!  here are the notes from the rest of our ride through:

Trail 3- there were some sections that had been marked with green ribbon - those all need to be hit.  At the top of the hill with the corkscrew switchbacks (before you intersect with trail 4 if going counter-clockwise) there are those 3 dips that keep filling with water.  thinking that area could use a re-route further up the hill.  Otherwise 3 is in pretty good shape.  would use some general de-berming on the low sides.  We did not ride the piece from trail 4 to Poag road trailhead.

Trail 4 - trail pretty good - could use general de-berming on low sides.  there is a section close to the bike path end that people have started to route around as the roots are pretty tricky - maybe take out roots or re-route?

Trail 7 - trail pretty good, but from trailhead furthest from bike path - on the first switchback - the outside corner could use some clean up - there is a small wall building up with dirt and leaves which wont drain well.

Trail 8 - we did some maintenance a week ago - going counter-clockwise to a little past the intersection with the 2nd loop that was put in.  so that area has been de-bermed pretty good.  but the rest of the trail could use low side deberming as time permits

Trail 2- on the last work day it looks like a lot of trenches were dug to help drainage - but its not how we would have done it - but not sure if we can say that they will be ineffective either.  just not how we would have tackled it.  not aesthetically pleasing to look at - but again maybe that is just us!  would recommend one of the more expert trailbuilders take a look and see what you think.

let us know if any questions!

I can't get Thursday off but I'm going to take Friday off.

If any one ones to meet up to help mark or go over what I've marked - just let me know what time works best for you

(no really - unless I'm in the hospital I'll be there - probably shouldn't have said that...)

If I don't hear otherwise I'll plan on flagging/painting areas to be worked by Friday afternoon.

Saluki00 - if you wouldn't mind posting here what you worked on Thurs. that would be great!

Thanks everyone!

I've only been to one trail maintenance day and although I have a general concept on what the goals are as far as trail upkeep I don't have the knowledge when it comes to working the dirt.

I am more than happy to clear back any growth or brush along the trails thou.

Any particular trails that need some help in that area? Just let me know and I'll gladly donate some time towards that.

Thanks!

To clear back growth just pick your favorite trail and go for it! :)

One section that hasn't gotten *any* love is the little connector between 1 and 3 that goes through the asphalt.

Thanks for the help!

Caleb
