I need new tires and the Maxxis Ikon look interesting. Do they work well for what we have around here?

They work great until there's a giant slit in the sidewall. That being said, I like the Ignitor on the back and Ardent up front.

Used Ikon's front and rear for a couple of years and I liked them.  They are fast rolling tires and especially great for racing.  I will have to agree with Brian on the sidewall not being the best.  I moved to Ardent in front and Ardent Race on the back as I wanted more grip.  Used to use the Ignitor and would go back to them if they made them bigger than 2.1 for the 29er.

There is a tubeless 2.35" Ignitor now. I am an Ignitor fan.

Make sure you get the EXC version for reinforced sidewalls. (Tubeless comes that way).

I have never ripped an EXC Maxxis tire.

i found them to be "ok", but prefer a more aggressive tread on the front (i.e. Ardent, Tomahawk, Aggressor).

As Gary mentioned, the EXO sidewall is the way to go with all our sharp, flinty rock.
